Crayon Lipstick DIY

I thought I’d be done with crayons by the time I reached my 30s! Apparently not.

My sister first introduced me to this idea over a year ago. I revisited the DIY when I was in search for the a shade that I was just not finding at the cosmetic counters. So instead, I made a trip to the stationary aisle at Target.

After doing some research online and testing several permutations, I figured out which ingredients worked best. They are as follows:

  • 1 crayon
  • 1/2 teaspoon of shea butter
  • a tiny piece of beeswax,  a sliver about 1 centimetre by half a centimetre
  • a pinch of cornstarch

The tools you’ll need are:

  • a double boiler (or makeshift double boiler, like I employed) filled with water
  • a heat-safe glass container, ideally one with a spout. I’d recommend a measuring cup.
  • measuring spoons
  • popsicle sticks, or something to use for stirring
  • a container to put the finished product in. I used a clean-out lipgloss container

Now here’s how it’s done!

Put the crayon, shea butter and beeswax in the measuring cup.

In the boiling, water-filled double boiler, place the measuring cup. Let this heat for about 3 or 4 minutes. Then give it a good stir.

Add the pinch of cornstarch to the melted ingredients. Let it dissolve while stirring the solution. Do this for another 3 to 4 minutes. The lipstick can be created without the cornstarch, but it helps lessen the shine and adds to the consistency of the lipstick.

Once that’s done, add the liquid to your container. You can either place it in the fridge for 10 minutes to let it cool and solidify faster, or you can leave it on your counter for about 45 minutes.

I played around with 3 colours: magenta, plum and radiant red. Here are my results.

Don’t forget to clean up! If the wax remaining in the measuring cup has solidified, place it back in double boiler to soften it up. Wipe the cup with a paper towel to sop of the remnants. Wash it with dish soap like you would normal. Under no circumstances should you pour any remaining wax in the sink. This will clog your pipes and cause you all sorts of problems you don’t need.

And that’s all, folks! So play around with this crayon lipstick formulation and make your perfect red lipstick, perfect nude lipstick … whatever you desire!
